Children Learning Reading ~ A learning to read program like no other

http://www.childrenlearningreading.com/images/layout/top-kids.jpg

The first several years of your child's life are the most important for healthy brain development and growth. Critical aspects of a child's brain is established well before they enter school, and it is the experiences during these sensitive periods of development that play a critical role in shaping the capacities of the brain.

Through extensive research, testing, and trial and error the creators of ChildrenLearningReading.com developed a learning to read system that not only allowed them to teach their own children to read before turning 3 years old, but by the time their daughter was just 4 years 2 months old, she was already reading at a grade 3 level.

They now want to share that reading program with other parents.

Lizzy Speare & the Cursed Tomb ~ Review by Mom Loves 2 Read

MEET LIZZY SPEARE…

…a normal twelve year old girl with a talent for writing, who has a very not normal family secret. And when Lizzy’s father vanishes, that secret will change her life in ways unimagined. (Spoiler Alert! It turns out that Lizzy, or Elizabeth S. Speare, is the last living descendant of William Shakespeare. Shhh! Don’t tell anybody!)

Then Lizzy and her best friend Sammy are kidnapped, awakening in the faraway land of Manhattan. Their host is Jonathan Muse, whose job is to protect Lizzy from becoming the latest victim in a family feud nearly five hundred years old. Could that be why the mysterious, eye patch-wearing Dmitri Marlowe is after her? (Spoiler Alert 2—he’s the last living descendant of Christopher Marlowe, a friend and rival of Shakespeare’s. But keep it to yourself!) Is Marlowe after Lizzy’s family fortune rumored to be kept in Shakespeare’s tomb? Does he seek artistic immortality? Or Revenge (with a capital R) for a death long, long ago?

In a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, Lizzy and Sammy are thrust into the realm of the mythical and fantastic—from satyrs and Cyclopses to Middle Eastern cab drivers and Brooklyn hipsters—in what is truly “an improbable fiction” as the Bard himself once wrote.

Let's Tune in now to Muse Talk TV where Lizzy Spear and her best friend Sammy are currently being interviewed . . .

Welcome to Muse Talk on Muse Live TV!

Thanks for joining us, my fellow Mythkind! Today we have two very special guests from the mortal realm. Chances are good you’ve already heard the story about these two but I’ll let them introduce themselves. Tell us a little about yourself:

Lizzy: Okay, I’ll go first. Hi. So, I’m Elizabeth Shakespeare – man that still sounds so weird! But everyone calls me Lizzy and for basically my whole life my last name was Speare.

Sammy: It was shortened so no one knew she was famous.

Lizzy: I’m not famous, Sammy!

Sammy: I’m Sammy Galletti.

Lizzy: He’s my best friend. We’ve been friends forever.

So why don’t you tell us a little bit about what it was like to meet Jonathan, the Shakespearian Muse. He’s very well known to our mythkind viewers but he can be a bit elusive. Now that you know him so well, what’s he really like?

Sammy: Meeting him was weird. I mean, cool but weird. He just showed up on Lizzy’s birthday and used some kind of magic and whisked us off to his castle in the city. Lizzy said it was kidnapping –

Lizzy: No I didn’t! [rolls eyes]

Sammy: Did too. You were so scared.

Lizzy: So were you! Anyway, it all happened sort of fast cause Marlowe showed up at my house and my dad told me to go hide but Jonathan was there and he got us out of there. I mean, it’s cool now, cause I know why he did it, but then I was scared. But Jonathan is a really cool guy, er, muse. He knew Will Shakespeare! And when he’s in his true form he’s this big ball of light and sound and total chaos. But otherwise he looks like a regular guy.

Sammy: Like a hipster.

Lizzy: What?

Sammy: That’s what my dad said. He said Jonathan was a hipster.

Lizzy: Whatever that means.

So you were taken to Jonathan Muse’s castle in New York City. I hear it’s a pretty amazing place. What’s your favorite thing about the castle?

Lizzy: The archive for sure. The entire Shakespeare archive is there. It’s like the best library in the world.

Sammy: Bo-ring! You kidding me? It’s a magic castle and you care about a bunch of old books? The coolest thing is the buried treasure in a GRAVE. And also Orion – he’s a giant gryphon with paws this big [holds hands out] and wings like this [holds arms open].

Lizzy: Yeah sure but you weren’t the one Orion tried to kill!

Sammy: That’s cause you weren’t supposed to be down there snooping around. You should have followed the rules. I would have told Jonathan to let him eat you too. You’re always doing what you’re not supposed to be doing. And you never listen to me. Which is dumb cause I’m really smart.

Lizzy: [sticks out tongue]

So Lizzy can you tell me what you like best about being a Shakespeare descendent?

Lizzy: Well, I guess having a muse like Jonathan. He’s really smart and really creative and even though it’s sometimes like having a second dad, I know he’s just looking out for me. And knowing him means I get to know cool people like Cleo – he’s a satyr.

Sammy: [whispering] Who you’re in love with.

Lizzy: Shut up! [elbows Sammy]

Sammy: [snorts and laughs]

Lizzy: I’m not. Honest. ….Anyway, it’s cool. I mean my whole life I’ve been a huge fan of Shakespeare and then to find out that you’re related to him! I mean, Wow! That’s incredible. The whole thing about Marlowe trying to kill me was slightly less cool.

Yeah, I wasn’t going to bring him up but since you did, what do you think his problem is. I mean why is Marlowe so dead set on blaming Shakespeare for his life?

Sammy: He’s crazy. I said that from Day One. And Lizzy was crazy enough to chase after him that day. Then things went from bad to worse.

Lizzy: I don’t know. I wish I could say that it’s this one specific thing. But I don’t know. All I know is that he hates me. And not just me, all of us. He hates everything to do with Shakespeare. He says I ruined his life. I’m just a kid! How could I have ruined his life?

Sammy: Cause he’s coo-coo for co-co puffs.

Okay last question – do you plan on living up to your ancestor’s literary reputation?

Lizzy: [laughing] Are you kidding me? I’m twelve! And he’s Shakespeare! Dream on.

Sammy: I bet she could. She’s really creative. When we were trapped in that old theater she wrote a description of a manticore with this magic ink that Jonathan gave me.

Lizzy: Sammy! Shut up.

Sammy: No, listen… honestly… she did. And she wrote it really good and the manticore came to life. Lizzy saved us.

Lizzy: You saved us.

Sammy: [shrugging] We both saved us.

Lizzy: We make a good team.

Sammy: [smiling] Yeah. We really do.

Well Elizabeth Shakespeare and Sammy Galletti – thank you both for joining us today. And tune in next week when our very special guests are the Symphonias – the sacred Muses of Music! Find out what Mozart was really like at home! Also they have some juicy secrets on Madonna’s early vocal tracks! See you then!

Now for My review
Lizzy Speare & the Cursed Tomb is a fantastically unique book for middle grades to preteens with an amazing amount of Shakespeare and nearly every fantasy creature imaginable thrown in.  The story line is one that sounded great when the author pitched it to me, but only a few pages into the book I was struggling to read it.  There is a lot of facts, history and information, and variety of characters thrown into this story. At times I found myself wondering what I had just read, what had just happened, and where the story was going.

I think the author has a great idea but needs to focus it a bit more.  The words do not flow as well as it could, and there are a few words that I think are a bit difficult for younger readers to understand.  There is nearly every fantasy type creature imaginable in this story and at times it became confusing to keep track of who was who.  I'd love to see this book rewritten with a little easier to understand language, and more flow to the story.  Otherwise I think this author has great potential with this story.
I'd give this book a 2.5 as is due to the potential to be an absolutely amazing book!

Mom Loves 2 Read ~ Review of Home Run by Travis Thrasher

Baseball star Cory Brand knows how to win. But off the field, he’s spiraling out of control. Haunted by old wounds and regrets, his future seems as hopeless as his past.
Until one moment—one mistake—changes everything. To save his career, Cory must go back to the town where it all began. His plan is simple: coach the local baseball team, complete a recovery program, and get out as fast as possible. Instead, he runs headfirst into memories he can’t escape ... and the love he left behind.
Faced with a second chance he never expected, Cory embarks on a journey of faith, transformation and redemption. And along the way, he discovers a powerful truth: no one is beyond the healing of God.
A novel based on the major motion picture starring Vivica A. Fox and Scott Elrod, Home Run is an inspirational story of the hope and freedom God offers each of us.

My  Review
Home Run is a story of pain, tragedy, suffering, loss, healing, forgiveness and acceptance.  The main character, Cory Brand is a baseball star.  His life is spiraling out of control with addictions he can't control and he finds himself flashing back to memories of abuse from his childhood.  His journey of pain and loss lead him to eventually accepting Christ as his Savior and finding the healing and forgiveness he had been searching for.

The novel is well written and flows well.  It is easy to read and easy for the reader to get caught up in the story and the character's emotions.  This story has references to salvation through Christ, and shows the healing process that can occur when a person turns from a destructive path and addiction and accepts the forgiveness and help God offers.  Those who love baseball will enjoy this book for the sports side, and those who love a good fiction read will most likely enjoy the characters and plot.

Overall I found Home Run to be a pretty good book, and I also think the movie will be a great one to watch - Home Run comes out in theaters April 19th. I personally recommend Home Ru n for readers ages 16 and up.

**A copy of this book will be given away during my Welcome Spring Giveaway Hop 4/1 - 4/16 - Enter for your chance to WIN this book.

Why is today called "Good" Friday? ~ Mom Loves 2 Read

Why is today called "Good" Friday when it represents Suffering and Death?

http://ts2.mm.bing.net/th?id=H.4750509647528461&pid=15.1&H=120&W=160

My children have asked me several times over the past few years why Good Friday is called "Good."   They don't understand how we can call something Good that represents Death.  So I thought I'd post a little about why I think it is "good"

Have any of YOUR children asked this same question?  Comment below and tell me about it!

If Good Friday is the day that Jesus was crucified, then why is it called "Good"?  What is there about the suffering, crucifixion and death of one man for the sins of all mankind that can be considered Good?

I could not find any scriptural reference that called it "good" so it made me wonder.  What is "Good" about Good Friday?  Well, I think about it this way ~ Jesus Christ, God himself in the flesh, came willingly to be born into a human body, lived as human and saw first hand their struggles with Sin.  Christ allowed himself to be crucified, and willingly gave up his life in death on the cross for my sins, and the sins of the whole world.
That is the Greatest Love one person can show for another . . . or as John 15:13 (NIV) states "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends."  To me, someone who willingly will die to save another's life - that is beyond "Good."

Dream Big: The Journey of the Jazz Bear & Chester then Chimpanzee ~ Children's book Reviews on Mom Loves 2 Read

Dream Big: The Journey of the Jazz Bear
by Aron Simkins
This simple bear has a big dream.

But when everyone makes fun of him, will he have the courage to pursue it?

Join the Jazz Bear as he leaves his humble mountain cave in hopes of becoming the mascot for Utah's NBA Jazz team. Colorful pictures and an inspiring story line make this a book the whole family can enjoy.
My Rev iew :
Dream Big is a fun story for young kids that tells about a young bear who wants to grow up to make people laugh and cheer.  He wanted to do something besides hibernate, but all his friends laughed at him.  When he tells his parents about his dream, his dad encourages him by telling him it is his decision.
This book encourages kids to dream big and try hard to become whatever they want to be when they grow up.  It has a great message for little ones.  The illustrations are cute, and even though I personally thought it could have been worded better at times, my two youngest seemed to enjoy having it read to them.
This hardcover book would make a great gift for young boys who like to dream big.  The sports theme also makes it more geared towards young boys.

Chester the Cimpanzee
by Les Nuckolls
Get ready to monkey around!

This beautifully illustrated hardback book tells the true tale of Chester the Chimpanzee and his human sisters growing up together.

Whether they're playing dress-up or having food fights, you'll find plenty to laugh about in this entertaining story.

Full of bright colors and lots of silliness, this is a perfect read-aloud book for preschoolers and beginning readers.

My Rev iew : Get ready to monkey around!  This adorable book is the story of Chester, a chimpanzee who grew up with a human family.  The children of the family become his "sisters" and teach him all kinds of fun and silly "human" things like dressing up in Mom and Dad's clothes, or throwing food at the table.
The story has wonderfully illustrated pictures on each page.  The story itself is well-written and so much fun to read.  At the end of the book I found out that the story is based on what really  happened when one family took in a baby chimpanzee for two years.
My girls both absolutely love this book.  They have read it several times and it still remains a favorite of my youngest when grandpa comes over to read to her.  This is a wonderful book for young children and would make a great addition to any personal or school library.

I received one or more books in the post above for review purposes only through Cedar Fort Publishing. I was in no way required to write a positive review. All my reviews are my honest and personal opinion .  If you have any questions or comments, please see my FTC disclosure or Review Policy.

American Bible Challenge ~ Season 2 begins 3/21 ~ Review

About the Show:
THE AMERICAN BIBLE CHALLENGE, GSN's hit one-hour weekly game show hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy returns for its second season on March 21, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT.

Providing an entertaining mix of pop culture and questions about the bestselling book of all time, THE AMERICAN BIBLE CHALLENGE pits teams who are playing for charity against one another in tournament play, with a finale that awards $100,000 to the charity of the championship team.

Season 2 begins March 21st on GSN!
With the first season of The American Bible Challenge being such a success, the second season should be even bigger and better!  I was given a chance to preview a few of the second season shows that will be airing on Game Show Network starting March 21st.

I was impressed by how fun and entertaining the show was as well as how it kept my interest. With the amazing talents of the show's host Jeff Foxworthy as well as this seasons musical co-host Kirk Franklin, the show is a must see.  I just wish that our cable company had GSN for us to watch!  I'll just keep up with the shows on facebook and GodTube!

The music is amazing and makes me want to get up and dance.  Then kids loved watching the previews and keep asking me when they can watch American Bible Challenge too.  Our family enjoy s spending time reading the Bible or Bible story books together.  The American Bible Challenge is another fun way to introduce scripture and biblical history to my kids, and keeps me interested as I learn more about different stories and parts of the Bible.

The American Bible Challenge if a great game show for the whole family!  Check it out more here on these links:
