Troll Hunters

Evil and danger rumbles under the earth. Follow the adventures of a group of contemporary teenagers who discover that their town, and ultimately the entire world, is under attack by fierce creatures from deep beneath the earth. These creatures were known to the earliest humans as trolls or goblins, but they are much more dangerous than their fairy-tale versions. The teens make unlikely allies along the way, including a half-man, half-troll, as well as some legendary constellations that quite literally come to life. The young heroes will also discover their own untapped celestial abilities in an epic battle between good versus evil.

Hocus Pocus Hotel

Tyler Yu asked Charlie Hitchcock to meet him after school, and Charlie assumed it was for a fight. But when it turns out Ty just needs help solving a magical mystery at the Abracadabra Hotel, an unlikely friendship is formed.

My Review:
I was given a chance to read both of these books and provide a review on my blog just in time for the spookiest holiday of the year . . .Halloween!  Both books are full of thrills, chills and spooky mystery.  I thought that both Troll Hunters and Hocus Pocus Hotel were fun and entertaining reads that I would recommend for middle grade to young adult readers.  Both boys and girls alike will enjoy the engaging characters, mystery and intriguing plots.  The books are both well-written and easy to read.  Great books for this fun holiday season or any time of year.

About the author:

Guest Post by Eileen Hodgetts ~ Author of Whirlpool & Kindle Fire Giveaway

DON'T FORGET TO ENTER THE GIVEAWAY AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST!

The year is 1923 and the jazz age is in full swing. Evangeline Murray, a young widow from Ohio, is recruited by the Women’s Freedom Movement to represent the spirit of modern womanhood by going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Evangeline eagerly embraces her opportunity to achieve fame and fortune, until she sees the power of the River and begins to understand the risk she is taking. Joshua McClaren, an enigmatic battle-scarred veteran of World War I, and the best boatman on the river, reluctantly agrees to launch the headstrong Evangeline. Joshua has seen hundreds of bodies surface in the Whirlpool below the Falls, and has faced death on the battlefields of Flanders and has no respect for the charming, impetuous Mrs. Murray, and her desire for fame. Before the barrel can be launched, each of them will have to face their own demons, painful secrets will be revealed and the Niagara Rivers will claim two more lives. Inspired by true stories of the Falls, Whirlpool is a romance, an adventure, and the closest that most of us will ever come to taking the fateful plunge over the Falls.Whirlpool is a fiction that is based on reality. Seven people have tried to ride over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Four have succeeded and three have died. The first person to make the attempt was Annie Taylor, a middle aged school teacher from Michigan who made a successful journey in 1901. Barrel riding at Niagara Falls is now forbidden by law, but at the beginning of the 20th century Niagara was a haven for daredevils of all types, and many of their exploits are included in the novel.

I want to give a warm welcome to Author Eileen Hodgetts.
She has stopped in today for a bit to share her new novel with the readers here on Loves 2 Read . . .

Review & Giveaway ~ Uncontrollable by S. R. Johannes ~ Book Tour

Book Summary

As 16-year-old Grace recovers from tragedy, her science class is chosen by Agent Sweeney at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to help with research on the new "Red Wolf Reintroduction Program".

While she’s excited about helping with the conservation of the endangered wolves, Grace knows this means being outdoors in the worst winter recorded, in a place she no longer feels comfortable. It also means working closely with Wyn (her ex) and his annoying girlfriend (Skyler), a girl whose idea of getting close to nature is picking silk plants and growing fake plants.

After a couple of wolves show up dead, Grace almost quits. However, when a fellow project team member goes missing, Grace continues the assignment under a renewed suspicion that someone might be sabotaging the conservation program. She quietly begins to hunt for clues.

Little does she know, she is being hunted too.

My Review :
Uncontrollable continues with Grace's story, taking up where Untraceable left off.  Once again Grace has captivated me with her motivation, determination and inner strength.  I loved her just as much in this book as I did in Untraceable.  I do recommend reading Untraceable before reading Uncontrollable, as there is much that will make more sense if you know Grace's backstory.

My interest was once again captured from the beginning.  The danger, mystery, hints of romance, humor and friendship made the story keep my interest to the end.  The new characters were introduced well, and the characters from the first novel (like Wynn) continued to grow on me throughout this story.  Though there were times when Wynn and Skylar were a bit annoying at times, but that was part of what made the story great - and did improve later in the book, at least with Wynn.

I have to say, Uncontrollable is another well-written, amazing adventure by author S. R. Johannes.  Definitely recommended for older teens and Young Adults (and adults who pretend we are young - lol)

Meet Millicent Marie on Loves 2 Read ~ Special Guest Post & GIVEAWAY

Guest Post:  Meet Millicent Marie

Hi, I’m twelve years old, and I’m in sixth grade. I have an annoying little brother, and – oh yeah, my name is Millie. Well – Millicent Marie, really. I hate it. Don’t you? I don’t understand why parents are allowed to name their kids. I mean – we’re the ones that have to live with the name.  Shouldn’t we get the option of choosing? Oh, I know that babies can’t talk and all. But there should be an age, maybe at around six, when a kid should have the option of keeping the name their parents chose or going with something new.

If I could choose, I’d pick Amanda. It’s a cool name don’t you think? Plus, I could be Mandy for short. Anyway – I sort of decided that I would be Amanda, at least on the computer. You see, I started keeping my diary on my laptop, and well, just for fun, I decided to sign each entry Amanda. It was harmless, really – that is until Doogle (that’s my younger brother) decided to nose around my stuff. Yup, that’s right, he found my diary. Not only that – he set up a blog – on the Internet – where he published my diary! The little weasel.

I was going to delete it, but I was getting all these emails from kids telling me how much they liked it, and well, I kind of liked the attention. So I kept posting entries. Only, nobody knew it was really me, since I pretended to be this mystery person named Amanda.

See the thing is, at school I don’t really have a lot of friends outside of my best friend, Natalie. In fact, I’m often on the receiving end of this mean girl Haylee’s rants. She’s the school bully and she’s particularly awful to me for some reason. So I try to do whatever I can to avoid her. In fact, this year, I purposely didn’t join the soccer team because she was going to be on it. Instead, I joined the Drama Club with Natalie to work backstage. That way I could stay away from Haylee and keep an eye on Jordan Cowell. I guess you could say I have a little crush on him. Okay – maybe I have a major crush on him, but can you blame me?

Anyway, that’s my story, at least some of my story. The rest you can read about in Karen Pokras Toz’s book, Millicent Marie Is Not My Name. Thanks for stopping by!

Until Next Time - - Millie

And to Start this Party off "Loves 2 Read" style
here is my personal REVIEW of
Millicent Marie Is NOT My Name
by Karen Pokras Toz!

Summary:
Twelve-year-old Millicent Marie does not like her name. After all, she was named for a woman who died more than fifty years ago and was not the most loveable member of the Harris family. Her friends call her Millie, but when she writes in her diary she refers to herself as Amanda – the name she always wished she had.

When Millie’s younger brother finds her diary on her computer, he decides to publish it as a blog for the entire world to see, including the boy Millie has a crush on. In the midst of all the mayhem, Millie/Amanda discovers she is suddenly Springside Elementary’s most sought after sixth-grade mystery gossip and advice columnist.

But not all is fun and games, as Millie quickly learns, once she realizes feelings are at stake. Nobody, least of all Millie, expects things to turn out as they do in this tale of friendship and respect.

My Review :
My son and I have enjoyed author Karen P. Toz's books about Nate.  Nate Rocks the World and Nate Rocks the Boat are both books that my son and I really enjoyed reading and reviewing.  When I was told that Karen wrote a book for girls, I jumped at the chance to review it.

Millicent Marie hates her name.  Not only that, but she is most definitely not popular in school, and would love to be, which is normal for most kids her age.  When her little brother posts her diary by making it into a blog, she is of course mad - until she starts getting fan email and realizes that through her diary alias name of Amanda, she can feel popular.

I love how the story shows the normal dynamics of the different cliques in school, and how difficult it can be for those kids who are not popular.  I also loved the insight into a few of those "popular" kids' lives depicted in the story.  I love how Karen shows that it is possible to overcome the stereotypes set on kids, and how if someone would just show some kindness and honesty, great things can happen.  Millicent Marie is able to make some great changes in the heirarchy of her peers and a few things in her school as well, but also comes to see that although the right words can make things better - words can hurt too.

Another amazing book by Karen Pokras Toz, and one I will definitely have my kids read as they get older!  Check out Millicent Marie Is NOT My Name for yourself.  I recommend it for ages 10 and up!

Blue Monday by M. Thomas Long ~ on Mom Loves 2 Read

Matt McAllister is the pastor of the fifth largest church in his state. He was a very public opponent of the lottery. When he accidentally purchases a ticket, he is stunned but his children are elated. His plan: throw the ticket away, protect his position as a minister and avoid wrestling with the very real temptation to take the money and run...even if the odds are millions to one. His children's plan: rescue the ticket from the trash, wait for the drawing and start deciding on cars, vacation homes, and travel destinations.

Long before the drawing takes place, Matt struggles to deal with the responsibilities and challenges of being a pastor, a father, and a husband as he deals with a long list of people and circumstances ranging from eclectic and funny, to frustrating and sad.

Matt begins each day determined to put the situation with the ticket behind him. The harder he works to deal with it, the bigger it gets. Every effort to avoid the potential damage the situation could cause makes it spin out of control even faster as new circumstances unfold.
Then the drawing takes place.

Suddenly, there's at least 186 million reasons, some hilarious, some tragic, that Matt's life, family, friends, and church will never be the same.

A genuine love and excitement for life drives him. As an avid reader, he loves a great story. Blue Monday marks his entry into the world of fiction writing, something he will tell you has been on his life list for many years, but he just never took the time to make it happen. During a near fatal incident a few years back, one of the main regrets he felt was that he had never written the books that were inside him wanting to be written.

In Blue Monday, his first fiction novel, he draws from a rich and varied background that includes designing and performing as a concert stage lighting designer with Grammy award winning artists, working alongside many pastors and celebrities, and traveling the country working as a Microsoft technical trainer.
His hobbies include reading, writing, golf, motorcycles, drawing, running, guitar (ok, a little guitar), songwriting with his daughter, and traveling with his wife.
