Guest Post: Meet
Millicent Marie
Hi, I’m twelve years old, and I’m in sixth grade. I have an
annoying little brother, and – oh yeah, my name is Millie. Well – Millicent
Marie, really. I hate it. Don’t you? I don’t understand why parents are allowed
to name their kids. I mean – we’re the ones that have to live with the name. Shouldn’t we get the option of choosing? Oh,
I know that babies can’t talk and all. But there should be an age, maybe at
around six, when a kid should have the option of keeping the name their parents
chose or going with something new.
If I could choose, I’d pick Amanda. It’s a cool name don’t
you think? Plus, I could be Mandy for short. Anyway – I sort of decided that I
would be Amanda, at least on the computer. You see, I started keeping my diary
on my laptop, and well, just for fun, I decided to sign each entry Amanda. It
was harmless, really – that is until Doogle (that’s my younger brother) decided
to nose around my stuff. Yup, that’s right, he found my diary. Not only that –
he set up a blog – on the Internet – where he published my diary! The little weasel.
I was going to delete it, but I was getting all these emails
from kids telling me how much they liked it, and well, I kind of liked the
attention. So I kept posting entries. Only, nobody knew it was really me, since
I pretended to be this mystery person named Amanda.
See the thing is, at school I don’t really have a lot of
friends outside of my best friend, Natalie. In fact, I’m often on the receiving
end of this mean girl Haylee’s rants. She’s the school bully and she’s
particularly awful to me for some reason. So I try to do whatever I can to
avoid her. In fact, this year, I purposely didn’t join the soccer team because
she was going to be on it. Instead, I joined the Drama Club with Natalie to
work backstage. That way I could stay away from Haylee and keep an eye on Jordan Cowell. I guess you could say I have a
little crush on him. Okay – maybe I have a major crush on him, but can you
blame me?

Four disparate high school seniors come together to compete in their
school's battle of the bands. Sharing a love for playing rock and roll,
the members name the band "The Stereotypical Freaks" because they feel
stereotyped by their classmates - smart kid, geek, star athlete and
quiet weirdo… when in fact they know they are much more than those
labels that have been placed on them.
Seventeen-year-old
Ever’s love life has been on hold for the past two years. She’s
secretly in love with her best friend Frankie, and he’s completely
oblivious. Of course, it doesn't help that he’s dead, and waking up to
his ghost every day has made moving on nearly impossible.
Karen Pokras Toz is a writer, wife and mom. Karen grew up in Connecticut and currently lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband and three children. In June 2011, Karen published her first middle grade children’s novel for 7-12 year olds called Nate Rocks the World, which won First Place for Children’s Chapter Books and the Grand Prize Overall in the 2012 Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, as well as placing first for a Global E-Book Award for Pre-Teen Literature. In 2012, Karen published the second in the Nate Rocks series, Nate Rocks the Boat, followed by middle grade novel, Millicent Marie Is Not My Name. Karen is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI).
